The 22nd IRIST meeting - Cancun, Mexico

The 22nd IRIST (International Research group on Immunoscitigraphy and Therapy) meeting took place in Cancun, Mexico in the last August 2014. Such beautiful location was chosen to allow participants to attend also the 11th Congress of the World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology. The scientific program covered many important aspects of pre-clinical and clinical nuclear medicine, with top level speakers. Young scientists from all over the world were able to present their recent findings and abstracts were published on a special issue of The Quarterly Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging published in 2015.

The 21th IRIST meeting

The 21th IRIST (International Research group on Immunoscitigraphy and Therapy) meeting took place from October 31s until November 2nd, 2012, at Bertinoro Castle, Italy.
Congress President, Prof. Dr. Richard P. Baum had chosen this beatiful Italian location to allow members to attend the conference just after their participation at the EANM Congress in Milan. The scientific program was mainly assembled by Prof. Baum with help of IRIST Secretary Prof. Dr. Alberto Signore.
16 invited speakers gave excellent lectures on basic research, dosimetry and therapy of lymphoma, neuroendocrine tumours (NET), thyroid cancer, prostate cancer, and pancreatic cancer. An important part of the congress was devoted to diagnostic imaging with radiolabelled antibodies and peptides in the field of oncology. This report summarizes the main scientific information shared during the 21th International IRIST congress. More can be seen by the enclosed abstracts to this supplement of the Quarterly Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, the official journal of IRIST society.

Prof. Dr. Rudi Dierckx delivered the meeting keynote address, emphasizing the role of nuclear medicine on personalized treatments that shoud maximize therapeutic effects while minimizing disease burden taking into account the individual disease signature. To this regard, radiolabelled antibodies and peptides have opened a route towards personalized medicine by facilitating drug discovery, diagnosis, therapy stratification and evaluation of therapy efficacy.
Subsequently, J. Harvey Turner from Fremantle, Australia and Jasna Mihailovic from Sremska Kamenica, Serbia gave two important “state of the art” lectures focusing on the treatment of lymphoma followed by the oral presentation of Dr. Martina Sollini from Pisa, Italy on the diagnosis of thymic cancer using radiolabelled 68Ga-somatostatin analogues and 18F-FDG.

The focus of Day 2 was on the diagnostic and therapeutic use of radiolabelled peptides and antibodies in prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, NET, thyroid cancer, with key lectures presented by Stanley J. Goldsmith (New York, USA), Jean-François Chatal (Nantes, France, one of the founders of IRIST), Alicja Hubalewska-Dydejczyk (Krakow, Poland, IRIST Past-President), Jasna Mihailovic (Sremska Kamenica, Serbia), Stefano Fanti (Bologna, Italy), Richard Baum (Bad Berka, Germany) and Jorge A. Carrasquillo (New York, USA). Worth to be mentioned in particular is the lecture of Prof. Dr. Anna Wu (Culver City, USA) from Imaginab (official sponsor of the meeting together with Excel Diagnostics), on the importance of imaging tumour immunology and cancer microenvironment. This topic was also covered in part by Alberto Signore, Filippo Galli and Anna Rapisarda (Rome, Italy) in 3 different presentations that focused on several targets for imaging tumour micro-environment including angiogenesis, apoptosis, and infiltrating immune cells as a marker for the development of new tailored therapies for increasing host response to cancer cells.
The day continued after lunch with an excellent session on dosimetry with invited lectures presented by Marco Chianelli (Rome Italy), Marta Cremonesi (Milan, Italy) and Matthias Blaickner (Seibersfeld, Austria) focusing on biological and personalized dosimetry.

The third day was mainly focused on radio-immune targeting of cancer with the lectures of Giovanni Paganelli (Milan, Italy) on pretargeting without antibodies in breast cancer, Chaitanya Divgi (New York, USA) on radioimmunotargeting of renal cancer and Paola Erba (Pisa, Italy) on a new radioimmunotherapy approach of solid and hematological cancers with radiolabelled anti-fibronectin and anti-tenascin antibodies.
The congress closed with a session dedicated to imaging tumour micro-environment with oral presentations of selected abstracts.

Overal, 50 members from 15 countries participated in the conference and the general member assembly, and of course to the relaxing social dinner in a typical local restaurant where we tasted the wonderful specialties of this land of Romagna.

1st World Congress on Ga-68 and PRRNT

We would like to invite you to participate in the 1st World Congress on Gallium-68 and Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy (PRRNT) which will take place on June 23-26, 2011 in Bad Berka, Germany. This Congress, co-organized by the Department of Nuclear Medicine/PET Center, Zentralklinik Bad Berka and the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, is targeted to all chemists, physicians, and investigators dealing with generators, PET radiochemistry as well as molecular imaging and radio-nuclide therapy.
Attendance should be particularly useful to those who are new in the field or are interested in broadening their understanding of the rapidly developing research and clinical applications of Ga-68 and other generator-produced PET radioisotopes, new PET radiopharmaceuticals as well as PRRNT.
The congress aims at both - to educate and to offer a unique forum for high level scientific discussions on the recent developments in the exciting field of THERANOSTICS. We expect outstanding speakers from all over the world who certainly will give fascinating insights in their research and clinical work, thus creating new ideas and concepts on the way to personalized medicine.
A number of companies have already accepted our invitation to participate in the Industry Exhibition which will present the latest technological developments in generator technology and Ga-68 modules, devices and labeling strategies.
In addition, the congress offers the opportunity for a “Hands-on Training Course” on 68Ge/68Ga generators and for learning the practical principles of 68Ga labelling procedures. This course is organized (for a limited number of participants) on June 27-29, 2011 at the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany.
Aside from the congress activities you have the opportunity to explore Weimar, the city of Goethe and Schiller, and the European Capital of Culture in 1999. Exchange ideas and have interactions with colleagues from around the world - and make new friends!
We are looking forward to meet you in Bad Berka and hope and expect that you will have an unforgettable stay!
